Building a Firm Foundation

Building a Firm Foundation

Introduction

We are reminded that calling Jesus “Lord” means nothing if we are not willing to obey Him. As we reflect on His words in Luke 6:46–49, we see ourselves in the contrast He gives: when we build our lives on the rock—on Jesus and His teachings—we become like the wise builder whose house stands firm through every storm. But when we ignore His instructions, we risk collapsing under life’s pressures. This encourages us to deepen our roots, study the word intentionally, and allow God to shape the way we live, think, and respond to challenges.

As we continue growing, we look to examples like the centurion in Luke 7:7–9, whose faith in Jesus’ authority moved the heart of God. We learn that when we submit to His word and act on what He says, healing, breakthrough, and transformation follow. Building on Christ means trusting that every promise He speaks is stronger than any storm we face. When we choose faith and obedience, we position ourselves to experience victory, stability, and a life grounded in the unshakable power of God’s word.

According to Luke 6:46-49, what does Jesus say about calling Him ‘Lord’ but not doing what He says?

When we read Jesus’ words in Luke 6:46–49, we are reminded that calling Him “Lord” without obedience leaves us spiritually unstable. He compares this to a man building a house with no foundation—when the floods of life hit, everything collapses.

As we reflect on this, we realise He invites us to live out His teachings daily so that our faith stands strong. We don’t want to be people who speak devotion but lack action; instead, we choose to build deeply, trusting that His instructions anchor our lives when pressure comes.

What is the significance of building a house on a rock according to the sermon?

For us, building on the rock means allowing Jesus’ word to shape our decisions, attitudes, and responses. His teachings become the solid foundation that sustains us through uncertainties. When we are rooted in Him, storms may rage, but our lives remain steady because the rock beneath us is unmovable. We are learning that obedience is not restriction—it is protection, strength, and stability.

What does the sermon say about the storms of life?

We all walk through storms—health issues, family tension, financial pressure, and emotional battles. Yet we’ve seen that when Jesus is our foundation, we don’t crumble. His presence gives us resilience even when life feels overwhelming. These storms do not mean God has abandoned us; rather, they reveal whether we’ve truly built on Him. And because we have, we stand.

Why is it important to know God personally according to the sermon?

We’ve learned that personal intimacy with God is essential. When storms hit and no one is around to encourage us, it is His voice, His word, and His presence that carry us through. Knowing Him personally means we don’t panic when life shifts; instead, we draw strength from relationship, not just routine. We want to know Him deeply so we can walk confidently in every season.

What example from Luke chapter 7 is used to illustrate faith in the sermon?

The centurion in Luke 7 reminds us what true faith looks like. He believed Jesus’ authority was so complete that one word from Him could heal his servant. This challenges us to see Jesus not just as willing but fully able to move in our lives with a single command.

How does the centurion demonstrate his faith?

We’re inspired by how the centurion refused to rely on physical evidence. He told Jesus He didn’t need to enter his home—“just say the word.” That level of confidence in Christ’s authority encourages us to trust His word even before we see results. We want to grow in that same unwavering faith.

What does the sermon say about the power of the Word of God?

We affirm that God’s word is alive and powerful. It heals, restores, creates, provides, and gives peace. The word isn’t just information—it is God Himself moving in our lives. When we speak or meditate on scripture, we are releasing divine power into our situations.

What happened when Jesus raised the widow’s only son?

When Jesus met the grieving widow, His compassion moved Him. He told her not to weep and then raised her son from the dead. This reminds us that His power meets His compassion; He sees our pain and responds with life, hope, and restoration.

What is the message to believers about faith and obedience in this sermon?

We are encouraged to be doers of the word, not just hearers. When we build our lives on Jesus as our firm foundation, faith becomes our posture, and obedience becomes our lifestyle. As we trust His word, we believe He will bring victory, transformation, and miracles into our lives. We stand firm because our foundation is Christ alone.
