Throwback Sermon: The Necessity of Prayer (Part 1)

Introduction

This is part one in four-part series on the necessity of prayer was delivered by Pastor Samuel Gyasi between 12th May and 2nd June 2024, highlighting the power and importance of cultivating a consistent prayer life.

We recognise that prayer is not just a spiritual routine but a lifeline that connects us directly to God. Through prayer, we receive supernatural authority, wisdom, and strength that no physical effort can produce. When we neglect prayer, we open the door to spiritual attacks and become vulnerable to distractions and negative influences. Many of us have benefited greatly from the prayers of others, sometimes without even realising it. Prayer is the foundation of true worship and praise, surpassing mere attendance at church events. Just like Anna the prophetess, who devoted herself to fasting and prayer and received divine revelation (Luke 2:36–37), we are called to remain steadfast in fellowship with God.

We understand that prayer makes us spiritually sharp, helping us discern truth, overcome limitations, and walk in God’s power. Through constant communion with the Lord, we grow beyond seeking blessings to cultivating an intimate relationship with Him. Jesus taught that we “ought always to pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1), reminding us that perseverance in prayer brings divine intervention. Communal prayer and fasting strengthen us as a body, enabling us to stand firm against trials and spiritual warfare. As we commit to a lifestyle of prayer, we carry the glory of God into our families, communities, and church, becoming intercessors who impact destinies for eternity.

Why is prayer considered necessary?

We recognise that prayer is more than a routine—it is a powerful spiritual force that produces tangible results without physical effort. Through prayer, we communicate from the mortal to the immortal, aligning ourselves with God’s will and accessing His divine authority. Jesus Himself often withdrew to pray, showing us that prayer is essential for spiritual growth and strength (Luke 5:16). When we pray, we gain clarity, power, and peace that cannot be found elsewhere. Prayer gives us the authority to speak into situations and see transformation, not by our might, but by God’s Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

We understand that prayer builds a strong spiritual foundation, enabling us to navigate life with divine wisdom. It fortifies our inner man, helps us resist temptation, and keeps us sensitive to God’s leading. Without prayer, our spiritual lives weaken, but through consistent communion with God, we are strengthened to face every challenge with boldness and assurance.

What happens if people stop praying?

We know that neglecting prayer creates spiritual vulnerability. When we stop praying, we lower our defences and give the enemy room to attack our minds, families, and lives. Jesus warned us to “watch and pray, lest you fall into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). Prayer serves as a shield; it protects not only us but also those connected to us. Some of us experience divine covering because others are interceding on our behalf, but when those prayers cease, trouble often follows.

We must remain alert and prayerful, not relying solely on others to cover us. A prayerless life invites unnecessary battles and delays. By keeping our spiritual fire burning through prayer, we build divine protection around ourselves and our loved ones, ensuring that the enemy has no foothold.

What is the ministry of intercession and why is it important?

We embrace the ministry of intercession as a sacred responsibility to stand in the gap for others. Just as Moses interceded for Israel, turning God’s wrath away (Exodus 32:11–14), we are called to pray for families, communities, and the church. Intercession is more than an event; it is a spiritual assignment that sustains lives and births revival. Through intercession, worship and praise naturally flow because prayer aligns our hearts with God’s presence.

We understand that our prayers have the power to shift atmospheres, break chains, and bring comfort to those who may never know our names. Whether on mountains, in temples, or in our homes, intercession strengthens the body of Christ and ensures that the enemy’s plans are defeated before they manifest.

How does prayer affect a person’s spiritual authority and supernatural ability?

We realise that prayer elevates us to operate beyond the natural. It sharpens our spiritual discernment and opens our eyes to the realities of the unseen. Jesus told His disciples that some victories only come through prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29). Through prayer, we access God’s power and authority, enabling us to speak to mountains and see them move (Mark 11:23–24). We stop relying on intellect alone and begin to function in divine insight.

We also grow in spiritual authority as we spend time in God’s presence. Prayer empowers us to overcome fear, walk in boldness, and carry God’s power wherever we go. Our words carry weight when we speak from a place of prayer, and spiritual barriers are broken as heaven backs our declarations.

What example from the Bible illustrates the importance of prayer and fasting?

We look to Anna the prophetess as a powerful example. She devoted herself to fasting and prayer in the temple day and night and was granted divine revelation to recognise Jesus as the promised Redeemer (Luke 2:36–38). Her lifestyle shows us that sustained prayer and fasting bring spiritual clarity and position us to witness God’s purposes unfolding before our eyes.

Like Anna, we too are called to set ourselves apart in devotion. Fasting and prayer refine our focus, silence distractions, and make our spirits sensitive to divine direction. This posture allows us to partner with God in shaping destinies and discerning His will.
